Fostering innovation in the American economy was at the heart of President Obama's State of the Union address. On Friday, the White House published a blueprint for delivering many of these commitments.
That report, "A Strategy for American Innovation: Securing Our Economic Growth and Prosperity," sets out the steps the government will take to support schools and businesses to win the future.
1. Education: Every student should graduate from high school. To help achieve this ambition, the President will be proposing a number of programs to deliver a high quality education for all--including expanding the revolutionary Race to the Top initiative and recruiting 10,000 news science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) teachers.
2. Startup America: Small businesses are the driving force of the American economy. Startup America will work to support entrepreneurs and turn their great ideas into reality.
3. The Wireless Initiative: This will help make sure 98 PERCENT of Americans have access to high-speed, wireless Internet within five years.
4. Patent Reform: Help the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to reduce the patent processing time from 35 months to 20 months, allowing great ideas to reach the market faster.
5. Clean Energy: The President has proposed two important goals and tax credits and research investment to help reach them--delivering 80 percent of our nation's electricity from clean energy sources by 2035; and one million advanced technology vehicles on the road by 2015.
As the President said on Monday, "We have a responsibility to encourage American innovation." This report lays out how the Administration plans to do just that.
