The doctor who left Charles Algeri unconscious on the operatingtable for 35 minutes on July 10 while he went to the bank was allowedto continue caring for Algeri even after Mount Auburn Hospitalsuspended him, Algeri's lawyer charged yesterday.
Mount Auburn Hospital officials say another physician, RobertMiegel, took over Algeri's care after David C. Arndt was suspended.
But yesterday, Algeri's lawyer, Marc Breakstone, provideddocuments showing that Arndt was the attending doctor at the time ofAlgeri's discharge July 15, three days after his suspension by thehospital.
The unsigned hospital discharge summary statement, dated July 15,listed Arndt as the attending physician and included the patient'scare history and status at time of discharge.
Breakstone alleges that the report, dictated by Arndt July 14 andtranscribed July 15, indicated that Arndt was still the attendingphysician and Miegel was named as a coverup by the hospital.
"They are hiding their heads in the sand; this is an ostrichapproach," said Breakstone.
Michael O'Connell, hospital vice president for communications, responded that Arndt wrote the discharge note because he was the onlyperson who knew the patient's care history.
The hospital could not confirm whether hospital regulations permita suspended doctor to discharge patients.
Algeri wants a personal apology from the hospital and hasthreatened to sue.
"I have the right to know what's going on," he said.
In the meantime, Algeri is under the care of a new orthopedicsurgeon he found on the Internet.
