WA:Duyfken embarks on re enactment voyage

A $3.7 million replica of the Dutch cargo ship, the Duyfken (pron: DY ken), which made
the first recorded landing on Australian soil in 1606 -- will leave Fremantle today to
retrace its namesake's historical voyage.

The 24-metre replica will depart for a voyage up the West Australian coast to Indonesia,
where it will spend three months sailing the old spice route before retracing the original
trip to the Pennefather River in the Cape York Peninsula.

Under the charge of shipmaster PETER MANTHORPE, the ship will end its journey in Queensland
around Christmas.

In 1606, the Duyfken, a member of the Dutch East Indies company's spice fleet, left
Banda in Indonesia to try to find a southern island known as Nova Guinea.

According to Dutch legend, Nova Guinea was the burial site of King Solomon's gold.

The ship travelled along the south coast of New Guinea before reaching Australia, landing
at Pennefather River.
